Attorney Assistance for the Unemployed Debtor (AAUD) is a legal services program for those individuals whose only income is from unemployment compensation, and who do not have sufficient income to pay their unsecured debt. It is an attorney supervised debt assistance program that helps stop harassing telephone calls and threatening letters from your unsecured creditors such as credit card companies, collection agencies, doctors and/or hospitals.Because of your federally protected income, the law protects you! Your creditors are prohibited from garnishing or attempting to garnish this income. Thus, you are judgment proof and there is no reason for creditors to be harassing you.
The federal law prohibits garnishment of unemployment compensation. Some assets, such as household goods, are also exempt from seizure by a creditor if such seizure violates the Federal Trade Commission’s Credit Practices Trade Regulation Rule. In other words, these individuals are most likely judgment proof if he or she has no real property.
